Time is one of humankind's most common enemies. In addition to being indiscriminate, it will cut the best moments painfully short and make the worst moments drag out for what seems like eternity. Sampha understands this. He wrestled with the passing of his mother on his debut album Process and reluctantly accepted by the end that she would no longer be with him.

It's been over six years since Sampha dropped Process, the Mercury Prize-winning breakout that placed the London-based singer/songwriter at the center of the British indie music scene. Process was an exploration of Sampha's mortality, engulfed by grief and loss of his mother, and driven by a somber blend of acoustic and electronic instrumentation--all earmarked by his soulful, rich voice. The hotly anticipated follow-up, LAHAI, immediately feels like the product of the intervening years of meditation and exploration.

Venerated as the apotheosis of modern soul music, Sampha's debut album 'Process' mined the emotional voids in his life at that time, namely the agonising loss of his mother. Continuing the work of tracing a line through the tendrils of lineage and legacy, follow-up ‘LAHAI’ is a paean to his paternal grandfather, and his own entry into parenthood. Like its predecessor, ‘LAHAI’ is a totemic album documenting a now thirty-something Sampha attempt the work of reconstruction.
